Top Tips and Tricks to Improve English

Immerse means to be surrounded by something. If you are immersed in English, it means it is all around you.

1.      Maintain Journal of words: Write down/draw your new vocabulary, with its meaning and example sentences, this can be a wonderful way of learning English or any other language. This will be more useful to remember new vocabulary.

2.      Read the newspaper: While you are reading a newspaper read it aloud. Try to concentrate on new words. Write down new vocabulary in your journal with “context” in the news. Try to discuss news with your friends and family members.

3.      Watch English Movies and English TV shows: Watch movies and TV shows with English subtitles at first. Then again watch them without subtitles. So this will be a great exercise for listening.  If you do more practice with sub-titles then without subtitles, in future you will understand the conversation without needing of sub-titles.

4.      Start your own English language blogWriting is a great way of using new vocabulary and getting your head around grammar. Try and write something every day in your blog using new words and grammar that you’ve learned. Even if it’s only a few sentences, it’s very important to get into the habit of doing this.

5.      Learn English Idioms and Phrasal Verbs: Things like idioms and phrasal verbs are extremely common in everyday English conversations. If you manage to learn these then you’ll find it much easier to talk and understand conversations with native speakers.

6.      Keep an Eye on your mistakes: You will make mistakes, there’s no denying it. Whenever you are doing the mistakes over and over again, make a note and try to clarify your mistakes with your teacher. In this way, you can work on mistakes.

7.      Listening radio and Podcasts: Listen to news bulletins/songs/Podcasts/interviews in English. Listening to the pronunciation of words will improve your pronunciation skills. You can also learn new words and expressions this way. The more you listen, the more you learn! Try copying what you hear to practice your pronunciation and learn which words in a sentence are stressed.

8.      Have a debate: Debate all the topics that interest you with friends in English. Try to use as much vocabulary as you can to get your point across and listen to the other arguments carefully so you can argue against them effectively.

9.      Record your own voice: A smartphone can be a powerful tool for learning languages. Use it to record yourself speaking then listen back to observe your pronunciation.

10.  Practice Speaking: Be confident and speak as often as possible to as many people as you possibly can! Do not be shy to make mistakes! The more you practice the better and more confident you will become in your pronunciation and vocabulary. Remember, speaking is a skill like learning a musical instrument or new sport – the only way you can get good is to actually do it!

11.  Study or travel to an English-speaking country: Of course the best way to immerse yourself in the English language is to live in an all English environment. You’ll find yourself surrounded by the language everywhere you turn. It can be a more difficult and expensive choice, but you may find it to be a very valuable and helpful experience.

12.  Teach your children or friends some English: Recent research has shown that elder children tend to be a couple of IQ points above their younger siblings, and the most likely reason is that explaining things to their little brothers and sisters gives them an intellectual boost. In the same way, teaching someone lower level than you the English you already know is a great way of permanently fixing that knowledge in your own brain.

13.  Read English children’s books. Children books are added advantage because they are with more illustrations than adult books, which helps you to understand the story. Easy reading motivate you to read more books

Phrasal verbs: what are they and how are they used?

An idiomatic phrase consisting of a verb and another element, typically either an adverb or a preposition which creates a meaning different from the original verb.

Example:
I ran into my teacher at the movies last night (Run + into = meet)
He ran away when he was 15. (Run + away = leave home)
